The ClassicThe original text

「味甘微温。主痈疽久败疮,排脓止痛,大风,癞疾,五痔,鼠瘘,补虚,小儿百病。」

Sweet in flavor, slightly warm. It treats sores and long-standing festering wounds, expels pus and stops pain, great wind, leprosy-like disease, the five hemorrhoids, rat fistulas, supplements deficiency, and the hundred diseases of children.

RootBro's note — 'Tonifies qi, secures the exterior' is the core difference between huangqi and ginseng: ginseng tonifies the qi of all five organs, huangqi specializes in the defensive qi of the exterior. Yu Ping Feng San (huangqi, baizhu, fangfeng) is the classic combination for preventing recurrent colds — in modern terms, raising immunity.
PhD InsightA systems-biology reading
Key constituents astragalus polysaccharide (APS) and astragaloside IV: APS activates immunity, astragaloside IV activates telomerase — the two work in synergy.
Astragaloside IV · 黄芪皂苷IV
Activates telomerase (hTERT) → longer cell lifespan (a hot topic in anti-aging research). APS → T cells and NK cells activated → immune surveillance ↑. Also promotes hematopoietic stem-cell proliferation → qi and blood generation ↑.
An immunological reading of 'tonify qi, secure the exterior': defensive qi corresponds to the skin-and-mucosa immune barrier (IgA, mucosal immunity). Astragalus polysaccharides markedly raise secretory IgA levels, strengthening the respiratory mucosa's first line of defense — the material basis of 'securing the exterior, stopping sweat, keeping pathogens out.'
