The ClassicThe original text

「味酸温。主益气,咳逆上气,劳伤羸瘦,补不足,强阴,益男子精。」

Sour in flavor, warm. It boosts the qi, treats cough with upward-rushing qi, taxation injury with emaciation, supplements insufficiency, strengthens yin, and benefits men's essence.

RootBro's note — It is named for containing 'all five flavors' (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, salty), but medicinally its sour astringency leads. In Xiao Qinglong Tang, wuweizi gathers in the lung qi while mahuang disperses — one gathers, one releases, so excessive dispersal cannot injure the lung qi.

Its key constituents, the schisandrin family of lignans, are powerful liver protectants that also activate the Nrf2 pathway, raising the cells' antioxidant capacity, with protective effects on heart muscle and nerve cells as well.
Schisandrin B · 五味子乙素
Nrf2 activation → glutathione ↑ → antioxidant action (liver protection). Inhibits CYP450 enzymes → drug metabolism slows (mind drug interactions). Strengthens mitochondrial function → cellular energy ↑ → anti-fatigue (boosting qi).
The mechanism of 'astringing the lung, stopping cough': schisandra acids (a mixture of organic acids) astringe the respiratory mucosa and reduce secretions, while mildly suppressing the medullary cough center. Against mahuang's 'diffusion' it is the complement — Xiao Qinglong Tang's one-release-one-gather keeps plain dispersal from dissipating the lung qi.
